Aniseed Myrtle - licorice anti-deptressant!
Aniseed myrtle (Syzygium anisata) is a lovely rainforest tree originating from the Nambucca valley on the NSW north coast. It has fluffy cream coloured flowers and leaves with ruffled edges, which emit a strong aniseed aroma when crushed. The leaves are regarded as antiseptic and have traditionally been used for weight loss, lactation and stomach complaints. Aniseed Myrtle has an Anti-depressant action. The spice made from the crushed leaves of Aniseed Myrtle has a subtle sweet liquorice flavour. Aniseed Myrtle teams well with fish or pork dishes. Use Aniseed Myrtle anywhere that you require a subtle aniseed flavour such as steamed rice, seafood, stocks, breads, biscuits, pastries, desserts, ice-cream, or beverages. The dried leaf makes an excellent tea infusion. Aniseed Myrtle is available fresh or dried as spice, or ground to your specifications.
